Weighted Mean
Combines independent measurements of the same quantity, giving more weight to the more precise ones. Use it to average repeated measurements that have different uncertainties.
Parameters
- The weighted mean, Σwᵢyᵢ/Σwᵢ, with weights wᵢ = 1/δyᵢ².
Tips
- Enter the measurements in y and their standard uncertainties in δy, using Table or Rule. The x and δx columns are kept but not used.
- Absolute reports the usual propagated uncertainty, 1/√Σwᵢ. Nominal, the default, multiplies it by the square root of reduced χ², estimated from the scatter. See Weighted Mean in Help.
- A single measurement is valid: Absolute returns its value and its uncertainty.
